EZ Prints

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 24, 2008, 6:54 PM
Anybody have any experience with them? Good bad, whatever.

Also, anybody know about any artist alleys that don't care if you're selling prints with an unlimited print run? Most conventions seem to only allow artists selling originals or limited print runs and artists wanting to just sell unlimited print runs have to get a vendor booth which is more expensive plus I'm sure those guys feel lonely out there. In case you can't guess, I'm interested in trying out having a booth somewhere.

Also, I'll be at GenCon so if any artists want to meet up let me know. I'm going to try to cruise through artists alley and say hi to some people,

Warning, there are nude figure drawings there. All tasteful but I thought I'd still warn the young and the prudes.

Stuff

My Cerberus illo just got bought up by Jerry Grayson for Hellas. I'd gone to the site to check it out and we started complementing each other and he offered to buy the pic. We would have worked together sooner but I had to wait six months from terminating my contract with empty room studios. Now I'll be doing two more pics for him that look like they're going to be fun.

The game has transplanted the world of Greek mythology into a space opera setting. It's very cool. To check it out visit [link]

On another note, I'll have about 12 of the images for my mother's childrens' book done soon. I'm definitely better at drawing monsters than rabbits and children but luckily my mom is no critic. If you're the praying type, please pray for her. Stem cell transplant was last resort but there were no matches. So that just leaves cord blood transplant which isn't a cure.

Something big is going on with the New Gods of Mankind line and partnering with another company. Hopefully I'll be able to announce that soon.Pretty excited about that and GenCon. There will be three seminars at GenCon that are of interest plus portfolio review. Not to mention I've got the perfect way to display my portfolio this year.

So I should be posting the two pics for Hellas and one for Darwin's Evolution soon. I might post the childrens' book images soon too although I don't know what the point would be.

Edit:Also a good friend just joined DA so show him some love [link]

Legendary Artifacts for the New Gods of Mankind has been released on RPGnow through Dark Skull Studios. I've posted my illustrations for it on here and I was also the art director for this product. I think we got some excellent artwork for it. If you play roleplaying games this product might be of interest even if you don't play with the NGoM ruleset. Check it out. It will also be available in print very soon.

I usually never use layers except for foreground/background and when the layer will immediately be merged with the background to become one or two layers again. Well recently I've been getting used to using more and more layers UNTIL today when I remembered why the hell I never use layers in the first place.

Early on, I began thinking about having the image occurring right at the beginning of a rain fall so I threw in a cheesy rain layer and used a custom brush to create little rain splat marks.

Well, I just now accidentally merged that crap into the layer with the characters and saved. I was so confused when I couldn't find my rain layer to turn it off for a second. Then the horror of what had actually happened sunk in. Creates a lot of headaches.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to seeing if I can pull off that image because it's a lot more ambitious than a lot of my work. Usually I never try for so many odd light sources or strange anatomy. I usually ignore reflected light and try to have warm or cool dominate and not mix the too much. Throw in fire and we've got another issue. Plus with the rain just beginning to fall I have to pick how much the hair should be clinging or flowing at this point. How much steam should be coming off the fire from the rain.

Side anecdote. A couple of years ago I was showing my portfolio to the Art Director at Wizards of the Coast (Jeremy Jarvis) and he had a complement (maybe you had to be there) for my portfolio although directed mainly at my cover for Pun is Mightier than the Sword. I paraphrase but it went something like this," you may not always pull it off, like this one failed, but by god you tried." It was sort of like saying atta boy and cheering me on to attempt crazy stuff beyond my skill level. So I try to keep that in mind, that I should push forward with ideas even if they're difficult for me to technically accomplish.
